Truckee Vacation Rental Food Scraps: Ask the Host First

Quick answerAt a Truckee vacation rental, follow the host's posted trash instructions first. Without a specific instruction, put food scraps in the landfill trash, in a tightly tied bag, inside the latched bear shed. Never put food in the blue recycling cart or the green yard-waste cart; the Town does not collect food scraps curbside because of wildlife. Use a Town food-scrap drop-off site only after the host confirms guests may, and check the current site list first.

Where do food scraps go at a Truckee vacation rental?

At a Truckee vacation rental, follow the host's posted trash instructions first. Without a specific instruction, food scraps go in the landfill trash, in a tightly tied bag, inside a latched bear shed (a locking, wildlife-resistant enclosure for trash cans). Never put them in the blue recycling cart or the green yard-waste cart. The Town's food-scrap drop-off bins are a resident service; use one only after the host confirms it applies to guests and you have checked the current location list.

That is the whole answer. The rest of this page is the checklist that gets you there without guessing.

Why is there no compost bin at the rental?

Because the Town does not collect food scraps at the curb. The Town of Truckee's renter trash and recycling guide states that "we do not collect food scraps curbside due to wildlife," and offers a drop-off service instead. The same guide marks the blue recycling cart "NO TRASH OR FOOD WASTE" and the green yard-waste cart "NO TRASH OR FOOD SCRAPS."

So the carts at the house have narrow jobs. Scraps placed in either one are contamination, not composting.

What does a Truckee rental host have to provide?

Inside town limits, the rules for short-term rentals (STRs, meaning homes rented to visitors for short stays) are specific. The Town's bear shed installation guide says the Short-Term Rental Ordinance "requires all Short-Term Rental properties (STRs) to install a bear shed, subscribe to two-can trash service and post trash storage instructions for renters." It also tells operators to "Educate all guests on proper usage of bear shed."

The Town's Key Resources page for STR operators lists what must be posted inside the unit in a visible location, including a Good Neighbor flyer and a Trash / Recycling Guide.

Practical consequence: the instructions you need should already be in the house. Look for them before you cook the first meal, not on checkout morning.

One caveat. A Truckee mailing address does not guarantee the property is inside Town of Truckee limits; some nearby areas fall under county rules instead. If the posted material does not match what you see on site, ask the host which jurisdiction and trash hauler apply.

Which route should guests use?

There are three routes. Use them in this order.

Situation Route
Host gives a written food-scrap instruction Follow it exactly
No food-scrap instruction, or no reply Bagged scraps in the trash can, inside the latched bear shed
Host confirms guests may use a Town drop-off site Check the current site list, then drop off food scraps only, unbagged

The second row is the default, and it is the unresolved branch on purpose. If the question never gets answered, the trash route is the one the posted materials already describe, and it keeps food away from wildlife. It is not composting. It is the correct fallback.

What should you ask the host before arrival?

Send one message, early. Copy and adjust:

A host who has an arrangement will say so. A host who does not will usually say "trash," which is a complete answer.

How should you sort scraps during the stay?

Keep the system indoors and small.

  1. Line a small kitchen container for food scraps and keep it under the sink or in the refrigerator. Do not stage scraps on a deck, porch, or balcony.
  2. Drain liquids before scraps go in the bag. Less liquid means less leakage and less odor.
  3. Tie the bag tightly and move it to the trash can inside the bear shed the same day. The Town's trash services page says never to place trash at the curb before 5:00 a.m. on collection day unless it is in an approved bear shed. The renter guide states that trash "must be in a can or tightly secured bag" and that the bear shed "must be securely shut."
  4. Close and latch the shed every time. Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal's bear-aware page notes that most animal problems result from "people failing to latch the container after placing garbage out for collection."

The Town's Good Neighbor flyer for STR guests states that "Accumulation of trash and debris outside a short-term rental at any time is prohibited." Bags left beside a full shed count. If the cans are full, keep the tied bag inside the house and tell the host.

Bears are a physical hazard, not a nuisance. Do not approach a bear, and do not try to recover trash a bear is handling. The same flyer lists Animal Services at (530) 582-7830 and 911 for emergencies. TTSD also states: "Never allow children to play in, on, or around enclosure."

Fewer scraps also means fewer trips to the shed. A tighter shopping plan helps; the two-day Truckee food weekend plan is built around buying only what the meals need.

What do the Town drop-off sites accept?

Only if the host has cleared it. The Keep Truckee Green food scraps page sits under residential services and does not mention visitors. Do not assume a resident program extends to guests because the bin is unlocked.

As listed on that page when checked for this article, the Town drop-off sites are:

The page states that the food waste bin at Mountain Hardware "has been removed," citing frequent misuse. A Truckee Chamber of Commerce article from September 2024 still lists Mountain Hardware and does not list the Sheriff Station. That difference is the reason to check the Town page on the day, not a saved list.

At the Town sites, accepted items are fruits and vegetables, flowers, eggshells, meat, bones, avocado pits, and coffee grounds without filters. Not accepted: bags (including "compostable" ones), paper products, "compostable" plastics, cardboard, pet waste, cutlery or containers, tea bags, coffee filters, tissues, paper towels, and shredded newspaper. Empty the scraps directly into the dumpster and keep the locking lid shut.

The Community Garden drop-off has a different list. It runs May through October and excludes bread, bones, dairy, fats, leftovers, meat, and seafood. Rental kitchen scraps usually include at least one of those, so the garden is rarely the right destination for a guest.

If you transport scraps, go directly. The Good Neighbor flyer says: "Don't leave food in an unattended car."

What is the departure checklist?

Run this on checkout morning, in order:

The last item matters. A broken latch reported at 10 a.m. is a repair. Found by the next guest, it is an incident.

Frequently asked questions

Can visitors use Truckee's food scrap drop-off bins?

Ask the host first. The Keep Truckee Green food scraps page is listed under residential services and does not mention visitors, so a resident program should not be assumed to cover guests. If the host confirms guests may use a site, check the Town's current location list on the day, empty scraps directly into the dumpster with no bags, and shut the locking lid.

What can go in a Truckee Town food scrap drop-off bin?

The Town drop-off sites accept fruits and vegetables, flowers, eggshells, meat, bones, avocado pits, and coffee grounds without filters. They do not accept bags, including compostable ones, paper products, compostable plastics, cardboard, pet waste, cutlery or containers, tea bags, coffee filters, tissues, paper towels, or shredded newspaper. The seasonal Community Garden drop-off has a stricter list that excludes meat, bones, dairy, bread, fats, seafood, and leftovers.

What should I do if the rental's bear shed is full or will not latch?

Keep tied trash bags inside the house rather than beside the shed, and tell the host in writing straight away. Town short-term rental rules prohibit trash accumulating outside a rental at any time, because it attracts wildlife. Do not approach a bear or try to recover trash a bear is handling. Truckee Animal Services is listed at (530) 582-7830; call 911 in an emergency.

Why does my Truckee rental have no compost bin?

Because the Town of Truckee does not collect food scraps at the curb. Its renter trash guide says food scraps are not collected curbside due to wildlife and points residents to a drop-off service instead. At the house, the blue cart is for clean recyclables and the green cart is for yard debris only; neither takes food. Short-term rentals in town must have a bear shed and post trash instructions.
